Who is leading among the eCommerce platforms now?
Being a leading provider of Magento extensions, aheadWorks certainly takes great interest in Magento position among different eCommerce software. We are also interested to see if Magento can retain or perhaps even extend its lead.
Recently, we’ve come across an informative eCommerce survey made by our colleague in Magento promotion Tom Robertshaw in June 2011.
The top 1 million Alexa sites were analyzed through the use of special signatures that match for different types of eCommerce software. At the same time, the research took into account the country those sites were located in and whether they were using HTML 5. During this survey there were found 25,592 online stores.
According to the report, Magento continues to be the most popular platform with 4,705 sites, gaining 15% since February. 274 of the sites are running on the premium version of the Magento platform, Enterprise Edition.
This time, Magento Go was added to the survey. It is Magento’s new hosted solution for small and emerging merchants. Only 8 stores were found using Magento Go, and considering the results we shouldn’t expect many to appear in the top 1 million. The largest sites are fkc.com and chefstore.mx.
Most Popular eCommerce Software – June 2011
VirtueMart, the second most prevalent software in February 2011, slipped to 2701, giving way to Zen Cart, doubling to 3,167. This results in Zen Cart becoming the 2nd most used eCommerce software nowadays.
Of all software analyzed, osCommerce saw the largest loss, falling from 3,033 sites in February to 2,554 responding in this edition.
With results like this, the largest eCommerce players are: Magento, Zencart and VirtueMart.
As to the HTML5 adoption, 646 of the 25,592 online stores found were using HTML 5.

Taking into account the above report, we still admit this is far from a comprehensive analysis. But it’s a good indication of eCommerce stores in use. This survey will be re-conducted in around 3 months, so we’ll see if Magento remains the leading player in the eCommerce industry.

I am just wondering is there a more recent survey for this? I’m noticing a lot of other shopping cart softwares taking hold of the market, such as Shopping Cart Elite and bigcommerce. I just want to know how you fair with them today.
