In comparison with the number of 4659 extensions and themes (with 3356 paid and 1303 free ones) in September, the quantity has grown to 4867 (up to 4.4%) by October 1. This number includes 3518 (up to 4.8%) and 1349 (up to 3.5%) paid & free extensions and themes respectively.

This time we decided to find out how much the number of extensions in Magento Connect categories has grown up.

The leading ones are extensions for advertising & marketing (up to 7.5%), administration (up to 6%), catalog (up to 4%), pricing and promotion (up to 3%). These useful tools take the marketing development and store administration to the next level, providing Magento store owners with the new features to improve their stores’ functionality and usability and enrich business strategies and development as well.

No wonder that extensions for advertising & marketing and administration are among the leaders. The importance of these tools is well-known for both developers and store owners. From our part, we must say that the sales results for advertising & marketing and administration sections in our store are nearly the same. Anyway, all of these modules mentioned above are crucial for successful online business.

In comparison with the number of 4534 extensions and themes (with 3262 and 1272 paid and free ones) in July, the quantity has grown to 4659 (up to 2.7%) by September 1. This numeric includes 3356 (up to 2.9%) and 1303 (up to 2.4%) paid & free extensions and themes respectively.

We decided to find out a number of extensions and themes released in August solely. We discovered that the statistics are nearly the same: 149 extensions and 46 themes appeared on Magento Connect on August 1 – August 31, 2011.

This data means that a stable number of new extensions and themes appears monthly providing the Magento community with new opportunities for their online business.

Thus, as a part of this strategy, we decided to make our own research. Our goal was to find out how many extensions and themes appear at Magento Connect monthly. Although summer seems to be a vocational time of the year, still more and more extensions and themes appear every month.

By the beginning of August, there are 4534 extensions and themes available on Magento Connect including 3262 paid and 1272 free ones.

We decided to find out a number of extensions and themes released in a hot month of July solely. It turns like 153 extensions and 47 themes appeared on Magento Connect from the 1 to 31 of July.

This way, it’s no point to argue that Magento world is quite a fast growing place. Each and every month brand new extensions and themes along with new developing companies and stores appear, making the Magento market a busy place. aheadWorks Co. certainly takes great interest in the development of Magento community and software so we’ll come back in September with the new statistics on this great platform for online business

Recently, we’ve come across an informative eCommerce survey made by our colleague in Magento promotion Tom Robertshaw in June 2011.

The top 1 million Alexa sites were analyzed through the use of special signatures that match for different types of eCommerce software. At the same time, the research took into account the country those sites were located in and whether they were using HTML 5. During this survey there were found 25,592 online stores.

According to the report, Magento continues to be the most popular platform with 4,705 sites, gaining 15% since February. 274 of the sites are running on the premium version of the Magento platform, Enterprise Edition.

This time, Magento Go was added to the survey. It is Magento’s new hosted solution for small and emerging merchants. Only 8 stores were found using Magento Go, and considering the results we shouldn’t expect many to appear in the top 1 million. The largest sites are fkc.com and chefstore.mx.

Most Popular eCommerce Software – June 2011

VirtueMart, the second most prevalent software in February 2011, slipped to 2701, giving way to Zen Cart, doubling to 3,167. This results in Zen Cart becoming the 2^nd most used eCommerce software nowadays.

Of all software analyzed, osCommerce saw the largest loss, falling from 3,033 sites in February to 2,554 responding in this edition.

With results like this, the largest eCommerce players are: Magento, Zencart and VirtueMart.

As to the HTML5 adoption, 646 of the 25,592 online stores found were using HTML 5.

Taking into account the above report, we still admit this is far from a comprehensive analysis. But it’s a good indication of eCommerce stores in use. This survey will be re-conducted in around 3 months, so we’ll see if Magento remains the leading player in the eCommerce industry.
