Magento 2 Migration is a Beaten Track

Half a year ago we described some available options to migrate from Magento 1 to Magento 2. They offered a real way to complete the transition and enjoy the advantages of better functionality and code provided by Magento 2.

Magento 2 Migration is a Beaten Track

Today we are going to discover the number of Magento 1 stores that found it beneficial to migrate to Magento 2 and how they look and feel now. For the purpose we took a list of Magento stores from Alexa 1 Mln top websites downloaded more than a year ago, back in May 2015 and found out there the stores that currently use Magento 2.

The Profile of Former Magento Stores Migrated to Magento 2

According to our estimations, the share of migrated Magento 2 stores in the whole number of Magento 2 websites contained in Alexa 1 Mln is 36%. These detected stores are currently placed on Magento 2 while in the middle of 2015 they used Magento 1.

To be honest, all those migrated stores look just great and seem to represent very successful and amazingly different online businesses. Here are just a few names: Artifact Uprising (artifactuprising.com), Bauhaus (bauhaus.dk), MageMojo (magemojo.com), Gloo (gloo.ng). Red5 (red5.co.uk), etc.

By Countries

Most of the migrated stores originate from the U.S. and United Kingdom, see the diagram below. It looks quite similar to the profile by countries detected in August, but here the segments are even more crowded with traditional Magento countries. It seem to be natural taking into account that the stores are former Magento 1 users.

By Languages

79% of migrated stores are made in English, but we have also detected 9% of German-based stores and some other languages. The profile by languages is also just a bit different from all Magento 2 stores, where the Ukrainian (4%), Dutch (4%) and Spanish-based (4%) stores are quite often.

By Product Segments

The stores operate in different market segments and niches, but clothing, jewelry and accessories prevail, which is also quite trivial for the whole new Magento 2 niche. Still, the migrated stores do not provide any new Magento product segments like hobbies or food. They sell more traditional Magento products.

By Prices

The prices of the migrated Magento 2 stores are higher than the average Magento 2 prices by 80%, so it seems that most migrated stores are taking the average or even higher price segments. The difference between the B2B and B2C business models is huge, much more than the one detected for all Magento 2 stores. However, the price structure by product segments looks more reasonable and natural compared to the structure for all Magento 2 stores claiming $800 for Sport Products and $138 for hobbies.

Other Advantages

The Alexa rank of migrated stores is 479 172, which is also slightly better than the current average Magento 2 rank - 499 172. Additionally, all the migrated Magento 2 stores passed the mobile-friendly test by Google and they also have a bit higher loading speeds.

The Reasons to Migrate to Magento 2

So, despite the migration from Magento 1 to Magento 2 results in higher quality, usability, and certain other benefits, the number of migrated stores is still quite low. What are the reasons for that if the migration is so obviously advantageous? The most common of them are:

  • Inertia. Magento 1 users don’t want to create new challenges;

  • Conservatism. They do nor want to replace something that works well;

  • Lack of environment. The opinion that there are no enough Magento 2 extensions and themes;

  • Constraints. The opinion that Magento 2 is still full of bugs, so it seems to be wise to wait for a while.

In fact, all the above hurdles look just tiny if you consider all the benefits of the migration.

Time and Opportunities

The first and likely the best reason for migration is that it is just inevitable. You will have to complete this procedure sooner or later. But, the more you delay, the better is the position of your competitors currently gaining the experience of the platform usage and providing customers with better  shopping facilities. This technological and commercial gap will constantly grow and certainly affect your market position.

Better Code

The quality of the code entails a lot of other tangible improvements, including advanced scalability and performance, better  security, wide integration opportunities, easy upgrades, etc. Meanwhile, legacy software is going to become a retarding force of your business and will start pulling it back some day.

Advanced Interface

Magento 2 comes with advanced backend and frontend interfaces providing both excellent admin and shopping usability. The backend navigation is easy and intuitive allowing even new users to find necessary management sections in seconds. The frontend UI is also designed greatly starting from the default responsive layout till the elaborated checkout.

Improved SEO

Magento 2 stores are better prepared for online selling and include a lot of SEO-oriented features. Backend access to the robots.txt file containing the XML sitemap, all required meta tags, default Schema.org markup, user-friendly URLs and a powerful rewrites system, all these allow you to improve you SERP rankings and bring more traffic to your store.

Extensive Environment

Today, the number of available Magento 2 extensions and themes is enough for almost any required functionality or layout improvement. We may confidently say that most of the bestselling extensions have their analogs for Magento 2 providing the same or even better functionality opportunities.

Conclusion

As you can see, Magento 2 is no longer a terra incognita and together with all the available benefits it is going to be a smart choice. You do not need to delay the migration till the best moment as the available toolkit and practice allow you to migrate painlessly and start exploiting one of the most advanced ecommerce platforms just now.
